Module 1 - EdD Introduction Notes

This week was the start of the course for me and from the very beginning it was iterated how much of a mammoth task the next 4/5 years is going to be.

Many of the expected induction tasks were complete with a focus on things such as a library induction, how to use the online learning platform (moodle) and telling us the general structure of the course.

Interesting sessions were the history of the doctorate and its fluctuating 'status' in academia. The ultimate message here is that it is equivalent to a PhD as a qualification but some people's perceptions may change as to its value in the academic world. However, I am here and am certain I have made the right choice for the following reasons:

- The desire to be an active participant in my research project.

- The structure of the course suits my working professional life.

- The autonomous and self-directed style of the course.

- It is student finance funded and there is no need to chase scholarships and bursaries.

I left the first session feeling confident that this was for me but also prepared to accept the rollercoaster of emotion, hard graft and requirements in order to be successful.

My understanding and initial ideas can be seen below:

- The EdD requirement is that rigorous methodology is used in order to create original knowledge.

- These can be incremental steps based on current knowledge.

- My research intention is to.......

- Understand why the disciplinary knowledge in music is what it is.

- Challenge the canon and paradigm.

- Complete a discourse analysis of the KS3 music national curriculum.

- Offer alternative musical knowledge based on research.
